Quick answer
Use IO-Link when the device provides valuable process data, parameters or diagnostics beyond a binary signal and the controls team has a clear IODD, parameter-backup and replacement workflow. Keep simple sensors on standard I/O when IO-Link adds no operational value.
Best suited for
- Smart sensors whose diagnostics or parameters will be used by PLC, HMI or maintenance systems
- Machines needing repeatable sensor replacement with controlled parameter restore
Not recommended for
- Devices used only as simple on/off signals with no benefit from additional data
- Projects without an IODD/version and parameter-ownership plan
Selection steps
- Define the needed data — List process values, diagnostics and parameters that will actually be consumed.
- Verify device and port compatibility — Check IO-Link version, port class, current and connector requirements.
- Control IODD versions — Store the approved IODD and parameter set with the machine project.
- Design replacement behavior — Define who owns parameter backup/restore and how mismatched devices are rejected.
- Test degraded states — Verify cable break, wrong device, communication loss and sensor replacement diagnostics.

IO-Link adds bidirectional digital communication to standard sensor wiring. In addition to process values, compatible devices can expose identification, parameter, and diagnostic data to the automation system.
### From Signal to Information
An IO-Link master connects smart sensors to the fieldbus and makes their extended data available to the PLC or higher-level software. Parameters can be stored centrally and restored automatically after a device replacement.
### Predictive Maintenance
Temperature, signal quality, operating hours, and device warnings can reveal degradation before a sensor fails. Combining this information with Remote I/O diagnostics supports condition-based maintenance.
