Decentralized IP67 I/O reduces installation cost by 40% in FDA-compliant filling environment
Challenge
A pharmaceutical manufacturer was designing a new liquid filling line for injectable products. FDA 21 CFR Part 211 requirements mandated that all equipment in the filling zone be cleanable with CIP/SIP procedures. Traditional control cabinets in the filling zone were incompatible with CIP procedures and required extensive stainless steel enclosures at significant cost. The project budget required a 30% reduction in electrical installation costs.
Solution
SD-16DIO-M12 IP67 hubs were installed directly on the filling machine frame, eliminating the need for field-level control cabinets entirely. The IP67-rated die-cast aluminum housings withstood CIP chemical exposure and high-pressure washdown. M12 quick-disconnect connectors enabled rapid sensor/actuator replacement without tools. The decentralized architecture reduced cable runs from the central cabinet by an average of 85%.
Implementation
Fourteen SD-16DIO-M12 hubs were distributed across the filling line, connected via PROFINET to a central Siemens S7-1500 controller. The M12 D-coded PROFINET connections were validated for IP67 integrity after CIP simulation testing. All hubs were included in the FDA qualification protocol (IQ/OQ/PQ) and passed without exceptions.
